Grace in Imperfect Places in
June 21, 2026 · Barbara Ruffing
Though regrets came along in a number of ways, God’s grace has been present through all of his days.
As Father’s Day approached this year, I found myself revisiting a poem I wrote for my father’s funeral many years ago. My relationship with my father, like many family relationships, held both joys and regrets. Yet as the years have passed, I’ve come to appreciate how often God’s grace appears in imperfect places—in imperfect families, imperfect memories, and imperfect people.
This poem is one daughter’s attempt to remember her father honestly, while also recognizing the grace that was present throughout his life.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to recognize that people are rarely defined by a single chapter of their lives. We remember strengths and weaknesses, laughter and tears, regrets and grace. I’m grateful for the memories that remain, and most of all for the grace of God that carries us all.
Happy Father’s Day!
